[mood |pissed offpissed off]

I am sick of journos describing Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's 2 kids as "adopted"... yeah, so they ARE adopted, but they are also, just their kids..... why make the distinction? when somebody adopts children, they become parents in every way; they ARE the parents of that child.

The reason this is in my head today is because i just read some tabloid (yeah yeah) article about Tom and Katie-i'm-still-a-little-girl Holme's new baby. When writing about it, the journalist wrote something along the lines of  "This is Tom and Katie's first child; Tom has 2 adopted children with Nicole Kidman but no natural children of his own...."

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..... and Tom keeps going on about how magical it was to be at the birth of his child, something that he has never experienced before. All i can do is feel sorry for Connor and Isabella (his and nicole's kids).

Being adopted myself, i do feel very hurt when people are so scathing of adoption. When my parents found out that my brother was blind and autistic when he was 6months old, somebody said to my mum, "well, at least he's not your real child" as if that made it ok. Yet another bright spark asked her is she was "going to give him back" like had she kept the fucking receipt?!

As far as i'm concerned, my mum and dad are my mum and dad, i have no desire to meet my birth parents. i don't feel any anger or resentment towards them either- they did what they had to do; they were only 16 at the time after all. I don't really think about them at all to be honest, and i certainly don't feel traumatised or blame anything on my being adopted. My birth parents did the best thing ever when they gave me up- they gave me 2 parents whom i love to bits and who have given me the best life they possibly could. i thank my natural parents for that, and for not going for the "easier" option of abortion. i've met several other adopted children and they seem to htink that they can blame everything that goes wrong in their lives on the fact that they are adopted; GROW UP! Ok, so maybe i'm lucky that i have my parents but still....

Hum. Ranting now aren't i? i guess i'm so protective of my parents and when i read shit like that article... it just makes me so sad and angry.

Sorry for being boring. it's just something i feel strongly about

You feel free to rant as much as you like honey !! You are quite right though... I'm sure you're parents would never think of introducing you as their "adopted child"... just like they're you mum and dad - you're their daughter... but that's the tabloids for you I suppose... anything to try and make their stories sound more interesting !

Not that this is a subject that I know very much about... except for my mum being adopted and being found by her twin last year !!

I thought everyone knew the tale of my mum !! Quite sad really - her parents weren't married and broke up then she found out she was pregnant and had them adopted... I suppose back int he 40's keeping twins together wasnt that important... the sad bit was that their parents got back together some time later and tried to track down their daughters... but couldnt... both sets of adoptive parents had been told that the ohter twin was a boy !

I entirely agree with you - the people who bring a child up are its real parents, regardless of the biology aspect. A lot of people seem to assume that adoptive children necessarily have to be traumatised, or more sensitive, or different in some way from kids raised by their biological parents, but as far as I know there's no evidence for that.

A stable home life with a loving family is the sole most important thing for a kid, and it doesn't matter whether the people they live with are genetically related to them or not.

I've always thought the worst thing people can do to a baby is keep it when they can't look after it properly, for whatever reason.

OMG, I cannot believe that people exist who think that these are acceptable things to say to a person! This has horrified me.

I also have noticed the insistance of the media to include the A word in every reference to Tom and Nicole's kids (Yet they don't seem to with Sharon Stone, or Calista or even Angelina so much? Or is that just me?) - and did wonder how they were feeling with Tom doing the ridiculously OTT reaction to his baby routine. Thoughtless.

i do feel for those kids. i watched an interview with Tom yesterday (only watched it cos it was Russell Brand interviewing and i love him!) and, to be fair, Tom did talk about the wonder of his "kids" rather than just Suri..... i've noticed that they always call Angelina's children "the children she adopted"... not really noticed any others though... i just don't see why they feel the need to clarify it really.

thanks sweets. i'm aware that when i get worked up about something, i'm not usually particularly rational or open-minded about it..... making me just as bad as what i'm ranting about! but when i calm down i can usually see that :D

Agreed. In every way possible

Yet another bright spark asked her is she was "going to give him back" like had she kept the fucking receipt?!

How can someone say that?? There aren't words to describe that...God. Totally pathetic.

Right, I mean I'm not adopted BUT 2 of my cousins are - 1 of them was actually abandoned in China. Another cousin (different family) is autistic, but Christ! Why does that mean they are loved any differently??

And it's not boring. AT ALL.

so often people just don't seem to THINK before they speak. if they imagined themselves in the same situation, how would they behave? when they'd figured that out, it would be ok to ask, I suppose. but yeah, people are just so stupid, so often...:/

Seriously? Who the fuck says that?!

However, I do think part of the reason they always mention that Tom and Nicole's kids are adopted (especially now) is because Tom was unable to get 2 wives pregnant and suddenly Katie and BAM!
In all honesty (and Im being so serious here) I think some scientology person impregnated her. I dont think theyre biologically Tom's.

Sorry, as an Ausie (and having grown up around the corner from Nicole Kidman) I am programmed to hate Tom and anyone else that hurts 'Our Nic'.

Nicole is the bee's knees. love her! and i've never been a fan of Tom. The whole scientology thing is seriously odd and i've always admired Nicole for sticking to her guns as a Catholic rather than let the kids be brought up ass a Scientologist..... i love how Katie Holmes has been saying for years how she's a devoted, catholic girl who'll stay a virgin until her wedding night and how important her faith is to her... then, sudden she's converted to Scientology and is up the duff..... BIZARRE!

what is scientology all about, anyway? I read somewhere that they believe that some monster-type came from space and - I don't know - brought life with him. and that they have to pay lots of money to something. don't know then if this was total crap but anyway...:/ and what was all that tom eating the placenta about?! 'it's part of the scientologist rite.' that was mentioned in a tabloid. true or false? false I hope...

I dont know heaps about scientology although the guy who invented it is a science fiction novelist once famously quoted as saying "the easiest way to make money is to invent a religion"... like duh.
